Given that I am watching the Mad Men series at every given moment, I couldn't help myself but feature the show as today's muse. The ladylike old-school glamour of the Mad Men women and the sharp three button suits of the men has captured the hearts of audiences and fashion designers alike.
Set in 1959 and then into the sixties, the formal, glamorous style is one that can easily provide inspiration today. To avoid looking like you are stuck in a retro theme, pick just a few elements. A matte red lipstick, a full skirt to mimic Betty Draper's girlish style, a modest neckline, a strand of pearls or a cinched in waist.
The fashion of the women of Sterling Cooper, a mix of pencil skirts, buttoned up cashmere cardigans and a strand of pearls, made complete with a matte red lip has had me swooning. Joan is of course in a class of her own, single-handedly making curves fashionable for the noughties!
